Introduction

Jadav "Molai" Payeng, famously celebrated as the "Forest Man of India," is a legendary environmental activist and forestry worker from Majuli, Assam. Over the course of several decades, he has single- handedly planted and tended trees on a barren sandbar of the Brahmaputra River, transforming a desolate wasteland into a lush, sprawling forest reserve spanning over 1,360 acres, now officially recognized as the Molai Forest.

Nature is God. It gives us everything. I will continue to plant trees until my last breath. The forest is my home, and the wild animals are my family.
