Introduction

Dr. Verghese Kurien, universally celebrated as the "Father of the White Revolution," was an Indian social entrepreneur whose "billion-litre idea" transformed India from a milk-deficient nation into the world's largest agricultural dairy producer.

Early Life & Education

Born on November 26, 1921, in Kozhikode, Kerala, Dr. Kurien showcased academic brilliance early on. After graduating in Physics and Mechanical Engineering from Madras University, he earned his Master's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan State University. In 1949, he was assigned to a dilapidated government creamery in Anand, Gujarat —a serendipitous government posting that would ultimately change the destiny of the Indian dairy industry forever.

I chose to remain in Anand as an employee of farmers. It was the greatest reward I could have ever asked for. True development is not the development of land, or of cows; it is the development of men and women.
